On the surface a wood gate may not seem like a very integral part of your home, or your life for that matter. However, from an aesthetic motivation as well as an architectural point of view a wooden gate can really add a lot to a home’s design value as well as be a mental source of comfort to the homeowner.

Here are six ways a new custom wood gate can improve your life and enhance the beauty of your home.

Wood Gate As An Inspiration

A fine custom wood gate — whether it’s a wood garden gate, a wood driveway gate, or even a wood fence gate — can be a simple and effective way to add a touch of architectural style that may be missing from your home.

Do you feel your home’s outward appearance is somewhat boring and lacking any design interest? Do you think of your home as being lack luster or “plain Jane?”

Then adding a new wooden gate may be just the thing to give it some visual interest and to kick start you into thinking about a few more design elements. Once you’ve added your gate you might decide to incorporate a small Japanese garden, or perhaps a koi pond or even a rose garden and water fountain.

Adding a custom wood gate can really help you to add some lifestyle to your home!

A Unique Wooden Gate For Mental Relaxation

Imagine this peaceful setting: The entrance to your beautiful garden is a wooden gate that is lined and arbored with flowers and blooming jasmine vines.

This setting can be your source for mental relaxation, the visual cues evoking a fantasy mindset that can take you back to your childhood, filled with laughter and play.

Your wood gate serves as the portal to your “secret garden,” a mystical and mysterious area of wonder and enchantment.

Functional Wooden Gates

Sometimes the main reason to replace your wood gate is purely functional. You’ve had trouble opening and closing your existing gate for months and you are just sick and tired of it getting stuck when your guests are arriving or leaving. How embarrassing!

It’s definitely time for a new gate, and a better quality gate this time!

A Wooden Gate Can Update An Old Look

Maybe your home needs a remodel outside but a major remodel is beyond your budget. Are your current front gates still standing but with a finish that is worn off and splintering and with hardware that has lost it’s strength?

And you’re just bored to tears of this tired looking old house. A new wooden gate can be a great way of updating your out of date house and give you a renewed sense of curb appeal with the neighbors!

Protection And Privacy With Your Wooden Gate

Have you been feeling a little too crowded lately and would like to have a good deal more privacy that an enclosed yard with a gate might add? Maybe it’s time to make better use of your front yard and turn it into your front patio by enclosing your yard and adding gates that serve as an additional source of architectural appeal and overall protection.

Wood Gates Politely Keep Out Uninvited Guests

Are you always afraid of uninvited guests showing up outside your door? Or has that back yard pool made your back yard a danger to young children in the neighborhood that might wander by and want to take a swim even though you’re not at home? Time for a new gate!

Automatic gates can be used for many different reasons. Some of the most common include driveway and fence gates, and agricultural and farm gating. There are also automatic versions for commercial use. All of these can have swinging or sliding doors. The main things to consider when purchasing one for your home are privacy, design, security and type of automation desired.

Some can be opened with in-vehicle openers that are like garage door openers. Other openers can be on the gate and require a code to be entered before it will open. Some other types of accessories for automatic gate openers include key pad systems, photo beams, exit loops, phone entry systems, and safety loops. There are even those that are solar powered. Most have a backup system in case there would be a problem with the main opening system.

Most work when a radio signal is transmitted to a receiver that is wired to a control box. The control box reads whether to open or shut the gate. They are typically powered by electricity but can also be solar powered. Because there are different types of gates there are different power supplies for them. For heavy-duty or commercial use three phase wiring may be needed. The majority will use 240 volts. Closing can be done by a timer or by pressing a transmitter button. The time it takes to close depends a lot upon how heavy it is. An average gate will open in about 20 seconds. One of the few things that can keep a gate from opening is snow, but if the snow is removed there should be no problems.

After it has been installed the next most important part is the maintenance. Swing gates require greasing of hinges and sliding gates have chains that need greased as well as adjustments to the tension of the chain. Both types of automatic models will require motor and electrical maintenance. Those that are battery or solar powered require additional maintenance to maintain the battery and to keep the solar panels clean.

The choice of which type of automatic gate to use is generally determined by personal preference, fencing design, amount of upkeep needed, amount of available space and the reason for having one. The companies which sell gates will, most normally, be glad to help look through the different options and help determine which will work best for the given situation.

Solar Powered Gates

We offer a wide range of gate opener systems for above ground use. All these systems can be battery powered, and the battery charged via a solar panel.

Why Solar Power

A solar powered gate opener is completely self-sufficient and can work miles away from the nearest mains power. If your mains power is above 75 metres away there is a significant saving compared to the ground work and the cost of armoured cable.

Solar Power

Solar panel technology has advanced over the years and the latest mono crystalline panels are capable of producing electricity with full cloud cover. Some people refer to these as moon light panels. Choosing the right panel is important.

What else do I need?

You need a battery like a car or lorry battery, although a leisure battery is recommended, because they withstand being charged and discharged better. We supply a couple of suitable leisure batteries and our prices include delivery. We also recommend that you get a secure battery box made locally to protect the battery. You may have a post made to mount the panel on, but in our experience it is better to mount the panel away from the gate to deter thieves. As the panel output is “trickle charging” the battery a voltage regulator isn’t required.

How Long Will It Last?

A fully charged wet battery would power the gates for approx. 2 wks – 1 month of normal operation, so because it’s also being charged via the solar panel the system should run and run. Solar panels do lose some efficiency throughout their life (exact lifespan unknown, but expected to be 10 -15 years).

Replacing standard windows with double glazed units can often halve heat loss, practically eliminate condensation and often noticeably reduces noise from outside. The latter is often the primary reason for installing replacement windows and doors in busy inner city locations, as are the security benefits that come with properly installed units with multiple in-built locking systems. It is one of the most common home improvement projects seen in older properties.

Timber framed windows are naturally susceptible to rotting over time and regular maintenance is essential. This usually involves sanding down surfaces, patching any imperfections and then painting with a good quality exterior undercoat and then gloss. All in all quite a bit of work and not an inexpensive job, even for the keen DIY person. In contrast upvc surfaces require very little maintenance and even that is usually only a question of cleaning materials and soft cloths.

UPVC double glazing may not always immediately seem to be the most aesthetically appealing solution. However, the range of modern styles of double glazed unit is now fairly broad. While aluminium or hardwood frames might be considered an alternative, UPVC is generally a better insulator than either of these choices. Since it does not rot or biologically decompose, upvc is ideal for window and door applications. Resistant to weathering, it has low maintenance requirements, is tough and yet can be recycled. Of course for older styles of property aluminium frames may be preferred. However it always makes sense to check carefully for any local planning issues that may impose restrictions on this type of property – best not invest in new upvc replacement windows and doors, just to find that you have run foul of local planning regulations!

Timber frames are the most expensive choice but if your home is a listed building, they are often the only choice for replacement windows or doors. A variety of hardwoods are available, though the range of choices seems to be diminishing as upvc becomes ever more popular. Hardwood frames are not as durable as UPVC or aluminium and generally a thicker frame is required to provide the equivalent strength of upvc or aluminium and reduce the likelihood of warping. After typically 5 years a timber frame will need to be re-painted with the attendant sanding, priming, painting and the house reeking of paint for days.

UPVC windows or doors are durable, easy to maintain and provide the best level of insulation – while improving the look and value of properties. The latter is these days an important consideration and buyers look favourably upon properties that have already had this home improvement work done, knowing they will not have to put up with the mess when having it done themselves. The usual colour for UPVC is white but there are now a wide range of other options, including wood grain effects. Most double glazing companies offer a range of colours and styles. We would recommend you selecting internally glazed units with internal beading, this is the most secure design in our opinion. Always check what locking systems are going to be fitted – Yale is considered to be among the most secure. Modern multi-point locking mechanisms provide a formidable barrier for even an experienced burglar.

UPVC systems are generally multi-chambered with internal gaskets to ensure watertight sealing. They all feature some form of reinforcement, usually an aluminum or steel box section. Double glazing with aluminum frames has become less popular as upvc has found its way into the market. While aluminum frames are strong and almost burglar proof, they do not have the same high insulation properties as upvc. Since the pay-back is much longer with the more expensive aluminum systems, their market share has diminished in recent years. The side effect of this is that the choice of finishes and the number of experienced installers has also diminished because of this.

If you are on a budget and the structure of your windows is essentially sound, then secondary double glazing is a less expensive option. This involves fitting a matching window to the inside of the existing frame. Care must be taken to ensure no dampness is present when this secondary unit is put into position. This procedure is not only less expensive but much easier to install as no external ladders or scaffolding is required. It will however rarely match the sound insulation that a new double glazed unit would provide.

Approximately 60% of heat loss from a home is through standard windows. Installation of double glazing reduces heat loss substantially, consequently reduces bills for heating – 10% off heating bills are often achieved. There is also a ‘Green” spin-off, in that households burn less fuel and this plays a part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. All in all, installing upvc replacement doors and windows just make sense, for all the reasons stated above.

If you have some smaller children, especially once they get to the age when they first start crawling and walking around, there are some definite home safety awareness things you should be looking at. These can include all sorts of things, from gates, to plug protectors, and child safety locks. All of these things need to be done in conjunction to make a truly safe house.

The gates are some pretty simple things you can do right away. If you have stairs, than this is a definite must. The last thing you can afford to have happen is your child fall down the steps. I had this happen to me when my child go to the last step while crawling up (it was only like 4 steps), and as he stood up, he fell backwards. He was OK, but man is it a scary thing.

Another quick thing you can do is to place all of your chemicals in a high location. This would be anything you might use to clean with. The will eliminate the chance for any curious child to get a hold of something extremely dangerous.

Electric outlet plugs are also a must. Since kids think anything with a hold in it should have something jammed into it, like a finger, this will keep them safe. And, just walk around and look and see what else they might be able to get in that hole. The awareness is what should be looked at. Sometimes we just don’t see things at first glance.

I also had an instance where my kid dropped a penny behind the night light, while it was plugged in. Imagine the look on his face when there was a big flash and he shorted the electricity across the terminals of the night light. There are just things like that you should be looking for.

We walk through our house often, just to ensure we have stuff taken care of. We make sure things are out of reach if need be, or at least we discuss and educate the kids on what can happen if they mess with any of the items we talk about. Overall, cross our fingers, we have been pretty luck so far. But, it is mainly because we have raised our home safety awareness.

These days, people want to live comfortable lives. This has resulted in the popularity of automatic technological gadgets in the life of contemporary people. Both the proponents and opponents of technology agree that advancement accelerates any action or procedure significantly. In this light, various technological advancements and gadgets have been produced to aid the functionality of the modern day gates. One such gadget is the gate opener, which provides various options for operating your gate.

Although gates and doors are a common feature in any household, most differ from one home to another. The type of gate is determined by various factors including the traffic expected per day. Therefore, a gate for a small dwelling is not applicable in high traffic areas. There are certain factors you should consider before choosing to install an automatic gate. These include the traffic intensity both for people with vehicles and for people without. The other consideration is the amount of security required in the establishment. The gate should also cater for the two requirements seamlessly.

Apart from the home automatic doors can also be used in other areas. It is therefore necessary to consider the application before making your decision. Some of the common applications include automatic garage doors, automatic industrial doors and automatic commercial doors. Automatic garage doors have been around for a while and are famous for improving circulation and security. It also adds more convenience to your daily activities. For instance, you do not have to get out of the car on a rainy day to open the garage door.

Automatic Industrial doors help in better transition of people in large industries. They also speed up the transition of goods, materials and enhancing logistics, which is great for production. Finally, automatic commercial doors are perfect for large commercial establishments, which cater for many people on a daily basis. These use sensors that are activated when the customer is close to the doors. This enables the door to open and close immediately the person enters the building. Although automatic doors are exciting fixtures, the gate opener used can enhance or ruin the experience of using such doors.

Nowadays you can get automatic doors operated through a cell phone gate opener. This eliminates the need of carrying the remote control device around. Apart from making the opening process more convenient, this option also increases safety since the homeowner will receive text messages when the door is opened illegally. Another automatic gate opener is provided in the form fingerprint activation. In most cases, doors and gates are opened with keys. Although this method has provided relative security over the years, it has the disadvantage of keys getting lost or duplicated by people with bad intentions.

Operating the automatic gate using the fingerprints eliminates both problems. The operator only needs to place his or her finger on the sensor and the gate will open automatically. This can be classified as the most secure operation mode since your fingerprints cannot be duplicated or get lost. With the constant technological advances, it will not be long before other automatic gate openers are developed adding more convenience to our daily routines.

Before you go installing solar panels randomly about the house, you’re going to need to know how to calculate how much solar power your home is going to need. Solar panels aren’t cheap and, while some municipalities will actually pay you for producing more energy than you use, unless you’ve got extra money laying around that you don’t know what to do with, I’m sure you’d rather only pay for the panels you’re going to need.

Depending on a variety of factors – the type of panel you buy, the amount of sunlight each receives every day, etc. – most solar panels will provide between 50 and 200 watts of power per day. Looking at that you might determine that it’s not cost effective to try to power your entire home with solar power but you can substantially reduce your energy bills even if you only use solar power as a supplement to your regular energy source.

But first, you still need to know how to calculate how much solar power your home requires. To do that you’re going to need to take a look at the wattage for each of the electrical items you use in your home every day – your television, the refrigerator, the washing machine and dryer, the air conditioner and furnace, light bulbs, fans, computers, etc. This may be a real eye opener for you but it has to be done.

Now all you need to do is total up the wattage on the items that you’d like to power with solar energy, whether it’s your whole home or just a few appliances, to determine how many solar panels you’ll need. Now that you know how to calculate how much solar power your home is going to need, you can also calculate how much money you’re going to save by converting your home to solar power. And you can save even more money if you build your solar panels yourself.

There are many little day to day things in life that can be annoying, but one of the more irritating things is a sticking patio door. The good news is that as long as you have a bit of general repair knowledge and basic common sense, this can be a repair handled on your own.

Patio doors can be removed quite easily by simply lifting straight up. The door should be able to be lifted up and swung out of the bottom aluminum track, and then the top should come out equally as easily.

Sometimes the sticking door is the result of the door’s gliding system malfunction, or the hardware is corroded, or has tightened. This can be fixed by adjusting the bottom track roller or glider. A screw that holds the wheel in place may need to be loosened slightly but be careful since this hardware is often brittle and can break easily. Replacement glides or rollers can be purchased at your local hardware store but be sure to take the old one with you so that a proper replacement part is purchased. Once the wheel has been adjusted, re-install the door to see if this solves the problem. If not, it may be time for a trip to the hardware store to get a replacement glide or roller. It is also recommended to grease all working hardware to prevent further sticking or keep any of the metal parts from rusting up, making more issues down the road. Make sure that you do this before replacing the door in its frame.

Often the sticking door is the result of a dirty track, which is also a quick and easy fix for homeowners. Again, remove the patio door from the frame and put it somewhere safe from accidents. Use a broom or a whisk broom to clear the large debris away from and out of the track. Once that is done check the track for holes that have been made by the manufacturer. These holes are purposefully put there to help keep water drained away from the track. With a small piece of wire or an opened up paper clip, clear any dirt from those holes. Now it is time to find the vacuum cleaner or dust buster and give the tracks a quick vacuuming to make sure the smaller bits of dirt are all cleared out. Wash the tracks out and off using a mild detergent and water and rinse them with clear water once the first washing has been completed. Once the washing has been completed, let it air dry or wipe dry with a lint free cloth. To help prevent further sticking, rub the track with a waxy door lubricant or simply use a candle to coat the tracks with a light waxy coating to help keep the tracks easy to roll on. Now you are ready to re-install the door and give it a test run!

Sometimes the door is hard to slide because the rollers or glides have become dirty. You can choose to replace them, but with a minimal amount of effort, it may be just as quick and easy to clean them instead. You can use kerosene or charcoal lighting fluid or mineral spirits to clean off dirt and gummy materials from the rollers with the help of an old toothbrush. Make sure that you work in a well ventilated area when using these products and wear rubber gloves to protect your hands and goggles in case you scrub a bit too vigorously! Again, once they are cleaned and dry, add a touch of lubricant to keep them working freely and prevent any corrosion from building up on them.

In each instance make sure to check the doors movement after the re-installation to be sure your repairs did the trick, then sit back, and feel proud of a job well done.

Home Safety

Home Safety is something we all need to know. I can never remember where the things are that you’re supposed to turn to shut off the Gas, Water or Electricity, so I got my husband to give me a quick tour through our House so I could get a better handle on this Home Safety thing (and to share it with all my Readers, of course!).

Gas Safety

The First Rule is to Always Turn to the Right in a Clockwise Motion to Turn off a Valve.

Pop into my Website, [http://www.buildyourownhosue.ca], to see pictures of the Gas Line, Electrical Box, and exciting pictures of the Toilet! I’ve taken a bunch of shots so you can easily recognize these areas around your own house. (By the way, note how the Satellite Dish is in a nice, sheltered position — never put a Satellite Dish out in the open… it’ll just get damaged and then you’ll miss your favorite Shows, and we don’t want that!)

To Turn Off the Gas, you will need to Turn the Valve Clockwise until the Two Holes Match Up. Use a Crescent Wrench or Pipe Wrench for this, so be sure to have one handy — perhaps by the Front Entry or over by the Gas-line itself. (Odd little note: when my son, Aidan, was 3 years old, he loved his Crescent Wrench so much that he held it like a baby when he was watching T.V. Funny! He’s a Contractor’s Son, all right!)

You need to Turn Off the Gas if anyone is ever working on the Gasline (the holes are there so that you can lock in in an Off Position while the work is being done).
OR
If you ever suspect a Gas Leak — you might smell the gas in the house. Call the Gas Company and go and Shut off the Gas. Stay out of the House until they get there.
OR
If there’s a Fire in your house and you can safely get to the Gas-line without any possibility of you getting hurt, run over and Shut Off the Gas.

Electrical Safety

The Electrical Panel is generally found in the Furnace Room.

The Big Black Switch at the Bottom of the Panel is the Main Breaker Switch.

In an Emergency (like when you see smoke or fire coming out of a Plug), and it’s safe to do so, go to the Electrical Panel and Switch Off the Main Breaker Switch.

Problem: You’re using the Microwave and the Toaster at the same time, and the power quits to both.

Solution: Go to the Electrical Panel. Most of the ‘Breakers’ (other Switches) will be clearly marked with the name of the Room they service. Locate the one you think most closely fits the problem area, then Pull the Switch to the Opposite Side. This should solve the problem. You might have to try a couple of switches to get the Power back to your Appliances (or wherever they’re required).

Take special care not to use the same combination of power use in the future — find another plug for the Toaster, or use it after you’re done with the Microwave. (I don’t know why this is such a tricky combination — probably because of the power load…)

WARNING:

It’s critical that you NEVER, EVER Open the Electrical Panel. It could cause Serious Injury or Death. Never take any risks with Electricity. Call an Electrician to Solve any Serious Issues.

Water Problems

Okay, Water is pouring out of the Dishwasher or a Tap has Burst — what to do, what to do??

Go to the Furnace Room (Utility Room). Shut Off the Main Water Valves. Turn the Valve Clockwise (to the Right) to Shut them off.

The Main Water Shut-Off Valves look like Large Levers (often Red and Yellow) or in an older home, the Round Knob Handles. They’re usually on an Angled Pipe.

The Lever is Open when it is Flush with the Pipe in a Vertical Position.

The Lever is Closed when it is in a Horizontal Position to the Pipe.

Call your Plumber.

See if you have a Yellow Lever in the Furnace Room. That’s the Main Water Shutoff Valve.

And now for the Toilet… did you see the Bernie Mac (one of my favorite shows!) Episode where Wanda discovers the Toilet Overflowing? It’s every woman’s worst nightmare (or one of the worst!)…

Okay, so now you’re looking at the Toilet. There’s a pipe at the Base of it. See the little Lever? All you have to do is Turn the Lever Clockwise (To the Right) until it’s Horizontal (closed). That’s it!

Now you will probably still have a bunch of yucky water to clean up, but at least you’ll have stopped any more water from coming out. Now you can call your Plumber! Squeak open that wallet!

See how easy Home Safety can be? Mostly, it’s a matter of being aware of what can happen and having some idea of how to solve the problem. Just remember: Deal with what you can, yourself, then call in a Professional if it’s dangerous or too yucky for words!

Fire can be your friend. Everyone uses it in their homes, at work or even with leisure. However, its fury can be very dangerous. All of us know how destructive it is, especially when it becomes bigger. That is why it is very important for us to have safety measures in order to avoid injuries from fire.

There are simple ways to prevent unwanted fire in your homes. As they say, prevention is better than cure. You do not want to put yourself in the shoes of fire victims because it can be a burden. If your house is burned down, it can burden you financially (what more if your house is not insured). This can also lead to other difficulties. Your body may be compromised due to inhalation of fumes. In addition, you will be deprived from the comfort of your homes since you will not have a place to stay (if your house is extensively burned down). It is also hard to loose a lot of important stuff like old photos, documents and papers as well as various memorabilia that you keep within the bounds of your homes. All of the years of hard work can easily go down the drain if you become too complacent with fire.

As mentioned a while ago, any homeowner can practice simple measures to avoid fire from happening. One of it is keeping a fire extinguisher. This piece of device is not limited for business use only. Any homeowner can have the privilege of keeping one. This can act as your first aid for accidents. If your curtain or drape is on flame because of your candles, you can immediately extinguish it with the use of this device.

You can also try to install smoke detectors in your homes. Smoke is the first hand indicator when something is burning. Definitely, if you have such a huge house, you might want to install one of these devices in your rooms. That way, you will have some way of alarming yourself when an impending fire occurs.

Smoke detectors can also work hand in hand with sprinklers. Sometimes, they are interconnected. Once the device detects smoke, they set-off the alarms and trigger the sprinklers to shower water all over the place. This is very helpful in cases, where you can no longer control fire.

However, the best weapon to use in preventing unwanted fire from happening is common sense. These things are not needed to be outlined as part of your home safety precautions. Common sense tells us to blow the candle off when you leave your homes. Common sense tells us never to put anything that has flames near curtains or a trash can full of paper. It takes initiative to ensure that a cigarette is totally put off before throwing it in the trash.

Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and sprinklers may be too much for you to install in your homes. However, they can be great devices that can serve you well in your own fire prevention practice. Nevertheless, if you want practical and affordable means of preventing fire, use your common sense. There is no better way to do it.

Home safety is probably one of the most talked topics on people’s mind today. Can you imagine watching television with your family and suddenly a robber busts through your front or back door? It’s sad but our homes are not 100% safe. There are however some tips you can learn to help protect yourself.

First make sure you have durable doors. They should be heavy, thick doors that are difficult to damage and break down, equipped with durable locks. Be sure to visit your local hardware store or locate a reputable locksmith to install heavy duty locks. One of the easiest but neglected or overlooked practice; lock your door! The amount of homes that are simply walked into unlocked is staggering. Many would be robbers look for the easy targets and unlocked doors are what many burglars dream of.

Be sure to keep your windows locked, especially when you’re at the opposite end of the house. Some burglars will climb through unlocked windows. They’ll steal jewelry and other items in the bedrooms while you’re at the opposite end of the house or outside. You can install inexpensive but highly effective window alarms. Door alarms ideal for patio French or sliding glass doors. These devices will set of an audible alarm over 120 db scaring off the burglar.

Many homeowners will hide keys under door mats, in flower pots, on a window ledge, even in the dirt next to the stoop. These common places are where burglars tend to look, especially if they are not in plain view from the street or neighboring houses.

You can invest in diversion safes, such as a fake sprinkler head where a key can be hidden. However, if you don’t have a sprinkler system then a fake sprinkler head may be a dead giveaway. Fake flower pots are ideal for hiding keys. Another secure method is to install a digital lock where entry is done by entering an access code to either unlock the door.

You may want to consider installing surveillance cameras around your property. Some homeowners place a monitor beside their television so they can see around the perimeter of their home while watching television. Let people who pass your houses know you are aware of their presence. Burglars tend to be leery of houses with surveillance cameras. An additional tip…install signs that indicate the house is under camera surveillance.

If you park your car outside your garage that’s equipped with an automatic garage door opener make sure your car is always locked. An unlocked car is an opportunity for burglars to easily open your car and gain access to your house with your remote opener. Don’t become easy prey for a burglar.

Wireless home monitors are ideal to detect motion in your home while you’re away. These alarms can be programmed with up to 5 telephone numbers that you wish to program. When the alarm senses motion it automatically calls your cell phone, office or other numbers you desire to have notified. With these clever alarms you remove the risk of entering your home to an unwanted guest. If you come home late at night these devices are a must for you.

If you are going away on vacation be sure to stop your mail and newspaper deliveries or have a neighbor whom you know and trust collect these deliveries. Install timers so that lights in your home turn on toward dusk and turn off in the morning. Bathroom lights are good to leave on, if on the outside wall of the home. Try to have your exterior lights turn off during the day. Burning outside porch or flood lights can give a hint that no one is home.

Hopefully these tips can give added security to your home and family.

As part of regular home preparations, check boiler and dryer exhaust vents to keep them clear of leaves, debris or snow to prevent blockage. Also check batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Many manufacturers recommend installing new batteries every six months. Carbon Monoxide is a lethal gas that is odorless, colorless and tasteless, producing flu-like symptoms.

Known as Nicole’s Law which became effective March 31, 2006; all Massachusetts single and multi-family homes that incorporate fossil-fuel burning devices and/or incorporate parking within the structure near living areas must be equipped with carbon monoxide alarms. This applies to fossil-fuel burning devices such as natural gas, propane or oil furnaces and water heaters; fireplaces, pellet or wood stoves, gas or propane ranges. Check homeowner insurance which may also require compliance.

There are many types of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors such a battery operated and hard wired or both. Most hardware stores and even pharmacy chain stores carry these detectors. Be sure to follow manufacturer instructions for where to place the detectors as well as check with your local fire department and consult your state website for any mandates that apply to your specific building type and any local building code regulations.

In addition, Massachusetts and several other states require the installation of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms by homeowners, certified with a site visit inspection by the local fire department, prior to the sale of property. These types of laws protect the public from the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and they help save lives.

Chamberlain Professional Products®, the single source provider for secure, convenient and quality products for every access point, introduces the LiftMaster® Variable Speed Heavy Duty Slide Gate Operator (Model VSL 595). Further enhancing the dealer’s portfolio of gate access solutions, the VSL 595 features unrivaled engineering that makes it an ideal gate operator for commercial applications where securing an opening quickly and efficiently is vital to the location, such as airports, manufacturing plants, government facilities, as well as detention centers or prisons. As the newest addition to the LiftMaster family of heavy duty slide gate operators, the VSL 595 model is equipped with a high-starting torque, continuous-duty industrial DC motor. With variable speed functionality, the power of the operator enables it to quickly ramp up to speeds of 2.2 feet per second and support gate lengths up to 70 feet and 1,700 pounds while still maintaining soft start and stop operation.

Designed for high security installations, the VSL 595 is outfitted with features that benefit professionals both during installation and maintenance checks. In addition to ensuring simple and secure access, the VSL 595 features manual disconnect, which ensures that manual operation is possible during emergencies and maintenance work. Coupled with this feature, the VSL 595 also offers an optional Secure Fire Department Release Box that allows the gate to be manually disconnected from the opposite side of the fence so firefighters have immediate access at all times. This heavy-duty slide gate operator disconnect can also be reengaged without having to reset open and close limits, providing reliable performance for dealers in the field. Also, the fully enclosed, NEMA3E, pre-galvanized 16-gauge steel, hinged-cabinet that houses the operator is oil-tight, weatherproof and lockable, deterring vandalism attempts on the operator. Additionally, on the outside of the control box is an integrated three-button control station that can help speed up installation and provide easy access when troubleshooting. The VSL 595 is also outfitted with an external reset button, offering a simple, quick and convenient option when resetting the operator after the alarm has been activated.

“Equipped with an exhaustive list of safety and security features and the ability to operate at high speeds for quick and controlled access, this extreme-duty slide gate operator is engineered to support the functional needs of even the most high-security commercial applications,” said Ken Roehl, vice president, marketing, Chamberlain Professional Products. “This reliable and rugged addition to the LiftMaster line of commercial gate operators provides dealers with a technically advanced, powerful gate access solution, helping to differentiate them in the marketplace as well as springboard them into specialty markets such as high-security commercial and industrial channels.”

Adding to the list of standard features on this unit, such as a built-in 312HM radio receiver, an adjustable timer and a two-year warranty, this heavy duty slide gate operator is powered by the LiftMaster gate logic (GL) board. The gate logic board controls a fully adjustable inherent obstruction detection system, meaning that if the gate strikes an obstruction, a closing gate will reverse to open and an opening gate will stop. This system also provides inputs for external contact and non-contact sensors such as photo-eyes and edge devices that are synonymous with LiftMaster product safety features.

Originally posted 2009-07-15 09:08:29.

How much do you know about fires and home safety? Where is the safest air in your home during a fire? What is the proper home safety protocol for a fire? Take this short, six-question quiz to find out the answers to these questions and to test your knowledge of fire and home safety issues. After completing the questions scroll down to the bottom of the page to check your answers.

Lets face it how many of us have really thought about fire protection? It may cross our minds as we watch the news or read the paper. Yet we probably haven’t taken any steps to ensure fire safety in our own homes. Unfortunately most people think it won’t happen to them. It would be nice if that were true, but as statistics show it is not. Every year nearly 4,000 Americans die in fires and more than 25,000 are injured.

Fire and Home Safety

1. True or False: You are in a smoke-filled room. The correct home safety rule is to keep your head as close to the floor as possible as you exit.

a) true
b) false

Answer: b) false–heat and smoke rise, therefore the air closest to the floor is the coolest. Plastics, nylons, and other man made materials emit deadly gasses when burned, and these gasses are heavier than air. The proper home safety rule is to crawl to the nearest exit with your head approximately 18 inches from the floor; this is where the safest air is located.

2. True or false: Fire spreads methodically from one object to another and from one room to the next.

a) true
b) false

Answer: b) false–during a fire heat rises and temperatures can exceed 500 degrees. As this hot air fills the area closest to the ceiling it begins to descend and flow under doors and through cracks. Upon contact with a flammable object, this hot air can ignite a new fire in a different room than the original fire.

3. According to home safety guidelines, if a fire breaks out while you are on the second floor of your home you should…

a) open the window and jump to safety.
b) run to the door, open it, and exit the room as quickly as possible.
c) feel the door for heat as high up as possible; if it doesn’t feel hot, slowly open it and crawl to safety.
d) none of the above.

Answer: c) feel the door for heat, and slowly open it. If you open the door quickly and the air inside your room is cooler than that in the hallway, a back draft explosion could occur.

4. True or False: Children playing with fires is the leading cause of fire deaths in preschoolers.

a) true
b) false

Answer: a) true–home safety starts with teaching children fire safety rules. Two thirds of those killed in fires started by children playing are under the age of six.

5. While asleep, a fire starts in your home. Upon waking you should…

a) bolt upright and exit your room and home as quickly as possible.
b) run to the window and jump to safety.
c) frantically run out of the house yelling at your family to wake up.
d) roll out of bed and crawl to safety.

Answer: d) roll out of bed and crawl to safety. Bolting upright could easily plunge your head directly into the extreme heat and deadly thick smoke. One breath could prove fatal.

6. If your clothes catch fire, the appropriate home safety procedure is to…

a) run to your neighbor’s yard and jump in their pool.
b) frantically jump up and down.
c) throw yourself on the ground and roll around to extinguish the fire.
d) run in circles, scream, and yell until help arrives.

Answer: c) throw yourself on the ground and roll around to extinguish the fire. STOP! DROP! and ROLL! is the home safety rule of thumb when your clothes are on fire. Running amok fans the flames, causing the fire to spread.

Disaster can take place anytime, anywhere, including at home and unfortunately, we sometimes ignore that fact. Here are some tips to protect you and your family while enjoying your precious time at home.

Be extra careful with FIRE. According to the data from National Fire Protection Association (NFPA),in the USA alone, in 2004, there were 1,5 millions fire and those killed 4000 people and almost 20,000 injured. The fire also cost property damage on US$ 9 billion. Keep your children away from the stove and oven and do not go to bed without checking whether your kitchen appliances have been properly turned off or not. Install smoke detector and change when needed to ensure safety. Do not leave hot iron, or your stove on and make sure that your cigarettes are totally out before you empty the ashtray into the trash (if you are smoker).

Check your electrical equipment periodically to see whether it is installed properly or maybe it needs the new one because fire can be caused by electricity shortcut.

Keep your poison and hazardous materials like room spray, mosquito killers and so on from your children. Children are curious about everything, and there are some cases children have near died after drinking mosquito spray.

Never put your furniture on your verandas or balconies, especially if you have under 5-year-old kid. Your kids can climb up on in and take a life threatening fall.. Use gate barriers to keep your children away from stairs and steps. Stairs must be lighted properly.

Choking and injury is also one of the most killing disasters at home. Make sure that there is no tiny or hard object near your children. Keep sharp, hard objects like needles, nails out of your children’s reach. If you cook, do not let your children go near you, especially if you are holding a knife.

Place rubber mats in your bathroom to protect slippery surfaces from creating a fall. Clean your bathroom floor after taking a bath. When your children take a bath, monitor them closely.

Make sure that every door in your house is locked properly before you go to sleep or before you go to work. Create a peephole to see who is outside before letting someone enter your house. Keep your garage shut and money in safety in deposit box.
