On the surface a wood gate may not seem like a very integral part of your home, or your life for that matter. However, from an aesthetic motivation as well as an architectural point of view a wooden gate can really add a lot to a home’s design value as well as be a mental source of comfort to the homeowner.

Here are six ways a new custom wood gate can improve your life and enhance the beauty of your home.

Wood Gate As An Inspiration

A fine custom wood gate — whether it’s a wood garden gate, a wood driveway gate, or even a wood fence gate — can be a simple and effective way to add a touch of architectural style that may be missing from your home.

Do you feel your home’s outward appearance is somewhat boring and lacking any design interest? Do you think of your home as being lack luster or “plain Jane?”

Then adding a new wooden gate may be just the thing to give it some visual interest and to kick start you into thinking about a few more design elements. Once you’ve added your gate you might decide to incorporate a small Japanese garden, or perhaps a koi pond or even a rose garden and water fountain.

Adding a custom wood gate can really help you to add some lifestyle to your home!

A Unique Wooden Gate For Mental Relaxation

Imagine this peaceful setting: The entrance to your beautiful garden is a wooden gate that is lined and arbored with flowers and blooming jasmine vines.

This setting can be your source for mental relaxation, the visual cues evoking a fantasy mindset that can take you back to your childhood, filled with laughter and play.

Your wood gate serves as the portal to your “secret garden,” a mystical and mysterious area of wonder and enchantment.

Functional Wooden Gates

Sometimes the main reason to replace your wood gate is purely functional. You’ve had trouble opening and closing your existing gate for months and you are just sick and tired of it getting stuck when your guests are arriving or leaving. How embarrassing!

It’s definitely time for a new gate, and a better quality gate this time!

A Wooden Gate Can Update An Old Look

Maybe your home needs a remodel outside but a major remodel is beyond your budget. Are your current front gates still standing but with a finish that is worn off and splintering and with hardware that has lost it’s strength?

And you’re just bored to tears of this tired looking old house. A new wooden gate can be a great way of updating your out of date house and give you a renewed sense of curb appeal with the neighbors!

Protection And Privacy With Your Wooden Gate

Have you been feeling a little too crowded lately and would like to have a good deal more privacy that an enclosed yard with a gate might add? Maybe it’s time to make better use of your front yard and turn it into your front patio by enclosing your yard and adding gates that serve as an additional source of architectural appeal and overall protection.

Wood Gates Politely Keep Out Uninvited Guests

Are you always afraid of uninvited guests showing up outside your door? Or has that back yard pool made your back yard a danger to young children in the neighborhood that might wander by and want to take a swim even though you’re not at home? Time for a new gate!

As technology is fast progressing, several new things are coming up in the market to make your life easier. The automatic technology has brought for you the automatic gates so that you can remain secure and comfortable.

In the recent days, there has been a widespread use of the automatic gates. These gates are installed in homes, offices, factories and even garages. In this article, we will deal with the gate automation kits that are mainly installed in the garage.

The automatic gates when installed in the garage would simply reduce your effort. Now you would not have to get down from your car in order to park your car. You can just press the automatic button and the automatic gates will open. Again you would have to press the button in order to make the gate close automatically.

Apart from the comfort that you would get through the installation of the automatic gates, you and your car would also remain secured. Since you do not have to get down from your car, chances of any attack on you or your car would consequently reduce.

There are several different options for the automatic gates that you would get in the market. In some cases, there are sensors incorporated into these gates. As a result, as soon as a car approaches the gate, the sensor gets activated and consequently the gates get opened. The gates also close automatically.

There are also finger print activated gate automation kits. You would only have to place your finger in the sensor and consequently the gates will open and close automatically. So isn’t this wonderful? There are plenty of other options that would be available to you. If you make a thorough research about the different types of the automatic gates and its mode of operation all would be available to you.

There are several kinds of gate automation kits available in the market. Based on your requirement and your budget, you should make the selection. Some of the gate automation kits for the automatic gates include:

The above ground kits: you should purchase these kinds of gate automation kits if your garage is located on a main road and where safety is a major concern. The construction of these gate automation kits is not quite difficult and is generally hung from pillars of the stone or the brick.

The underground kits: if your garage is immune to damp, you should go for these types of gate automation kits. These are situated under the ground but are quite durable in nature. They are also quite strong and resistant.

The weather is often unpredictable. Yesterday it’s 70’s and sunny, today it’s 50’s and raining. Today we canceled all of storm door installs because of teh weather. And as always, there’s one customer who is not happy.

Well, for those of you trying to do it yourself, a bit of advice. Don’t install a storm door when it’s raining outside. The next thing I hear you thinking is, “Well, my porch is covered.” That’s the typical response. My response is “It doesn’t matter.”

The problem is one of humidity.

If you have ever wondered why you have doors that stick closed (or opened) somedays and not others, it’s the humidity. When it’s raining or snowing, humidity is high. The wood door jambs take in the extra humidity and swell which causes the door opening to shrink. Now you have door that is just a smidge to small for it’s opening, and thus it “sticks.” The next day when it’s sunny, the wood door jamb dries out and shrinks back into place. Then tadaah, the door now no longer sticks.

Back to storm doors. If you install a storm door when it’s raining or snowing, not only is there a risk of injury from electrical shock, you are creating a headache for yourself in the future.

Installing a storm door when the door jamb is wet means that when the door jamb dries out and shrinks, the new storm door now may have gapping around it and may not close and latch properly. Then you ahve to redo the entire install. Not fun if you hated doing it the first time.

Need another analogy? When you lose weight your pants don’t fit. Why? Either your pants are to big or you’re too small. Same thing with storm doors. If installed during rain or snow, when the wooden door jamb loses its’ “water-weight” on the next sunny day, the storm door becomes to big for the opening.

So next time you have a storm door installer cancel your install due to rain or snow, just know they are looking out for your best interests and are trying to save you a headache in the future.

Lets face it how many of us have really thought about fire protection? It may cross our minds as we watch the news or read the paper. Yet we probably haven’t taken any steps to ensure fire safety in our own homes. Unfortunately most people think it won’t happen to them. It would be nice if that were true, but as statistics show it is not. Every year nearly 4,000 Americans die in fires and more than 25,000 are injured.

Fire and Home Safety

1. True or False: You are in a smoke-filled room. The correct home safety rule is to keep your head as close to the floor as possible as you exit.

a) true
b) false

Answer: b) false–heat and smoke rise, therefore the air closest to the floor is the coolest. Plastics, nylons, and other man made materials emit deadly gasses when burned, and these gasses are heavier than air. The proper home safety rule is to crawl to the nearest exit with your head approximately 18 inches from the floor; this is where the safest air is located.

2. True or false: Fire spreads methodically from one object to another and from one room to the next.

a) true
b) false

Answer: b) false–during a fire heat rises and temperatures can exceed 500 degrees. As this hot air fills the area closest to the ceiling it begins to descend and flow under doors and through cracks. Upon contact with a flammable object, this hot air can ignite a new fire in a different room than the original fire.

3. According to home safety guidelines, if a fire breaks out while you are on the second floor of your home you should…

a) open the window and jump to safety.
b) run to the door, open it, and exit the room as quickly as possible.
c) feel the door for heat as high up as possible; if it doesn’t feel hot, slowly open it and crawl to safety.
d) none of the above.

Answer: c) feel the door for heat, and slowly open it. If you open the door quickly and the air inside your room is cooler than that in the hallway, a back draft explosion could occur.

4. True or False: Children playing with fires is the leading cause of fire deaths in preschoolers.

a) true
b) false

Answer: a) true–home safety starts with teaching children fire safety rules. Two thirds of those killed in fires started by children playing are under the age of six.

5. While asleep, a fire starts in your home. Upon waking you should…

a) bolt upright and exit your room and home as quickly as possible.
b) run to the window and jump to safety.
c) frantically run out of the house yelling at your family to wake up.
d) roll out of bed and crawl to safety.

Answer: d) roll out of bed and crawl to safety. Bolting upright could easily plunge your head directly into the extreme heat and deadly thick smoke. One breath could prove fatal.

6. If your clothes catch fire, the appropriate home safety procedure is to…

a) run to your neighbor’s yard and jump in their pool.
b) frantically jump up and down.
c) throw yourself on the ground and roll around to extinguish the fire.
d) run in circles, scream, and yell until help arrives.

Answer: c) throw yourself on the ground and roll around to extinguish the fire. STOP! DROP! and ROLL! is the home safety rule of thumb when your clothes are on fire. Running amok fans the flames, causing the fire to spread.

If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, and installing a door is a sticking point for you, you now have no more reason to fear. Figuring out how to do this will open up an entire new window of opportunity for you. The reason being that a new door can change the whole overall look and style to any room, as well as enhance the exterior of your home. Plus, and many people love this, by sealing more tightly shut can help decrease your heating bill.

Basically there are three kinds of doors. There are doors that act, as the entry to your home, there are interior doors such as for bedrooms and the all important bathroom door, and the combo storm/screen door. Replacing a door involves a few steps that must be taken, and I’ll go over those for you now.

The most difficult door is probably the entry door and once you’ve mastered this type of door all the others are pretty much a simplified process, since the locks are usually either much more simple or not even included.

Changing a combination storm/screen door will usually follow the same procedure of the entry door, though sometimes it’s a bit more complicated. If you’re unsure how to do it, look at your manufacturer’s information for more instructions, or call up and talk to a representative of the manufacturer, or the store that sold it to you.
Remove the old door.

You have to remove the old door obviously to replace it. You’ll have to open the door, and stick a wedge under the outer corner so as to take weight off the hinges. Usually, the door will have a hinge that contains a pin that you have to pop out. Sometimes after years of paint or rust this is a bit difficult. You’ll need something to tap it out upward to release it. After the hinges have been taken off, you can take the door off the frame.

You can either leave and reuse the same hinges or else take them off and use new ones. If you use new hinges, just ensure that they’re the same size as the old ones.

You may have to trim the door down to fit. You’ll want to cut along the bottom using the old door as a pattern, or else just leave a 1/8″ clearance along the bottom and 1/16th along the sides and top. If it’s going to be over carpet you’ll want to go a bit more on the bottom like

I have been in the access control and gate opener industry for twenty years and never before have I seen such a collection of garbage than what is being sold today by the discount gate operator manufacturers. Gate openers are more complex and require more knowledge to purchase than most people think. The first thing I hear everyday is “but my gate swings so easily, I can push it with one finger”. Well I would hope so otherwise it needs new hinges or some other type of repair work. Think of your gate as a lever (your gate opener does). The longer the lever (regardless of how light it is) the more leverage your gate exerts on the mechanicals and motorized parts of your gate opener. PLASTIC IS NOT A SUFFICIENT MATERIAL for these parts. Plastic dry rots, becomes brittle in cool weather and is not strong enough to counter the leveraging forces your gate will exert on it). The giveaway to this, the manufacturers don’t want you to know, is the small solenoid lock now being included at “no extra charge” in the low end openers. Its primary function is to protect the opener for being pushed, NOT security. Quality solenoid locks have 2000lbs of holding force, the “free” one is rated for about 150lbs force. GARBAGE. How can you avoid buying an opener with plastic parts? Ask the seller how much the motorized arm mechanism WEIGHS. Weight is the litmus test for motorized gate opener arms. If it weighs less than 20 lbs, it contains A LOT of plastic parts. Good quality operator arms use STEEL or STAINLESS STEEL gears and drive parts to LEVERAGE a gate back and forth. Steel parts weigh more (and yes they cost more too) but will last many times longer (giving you what you really bought the opener for – longevity and reliability). Quality motorized arms with steel parts weight AT LEAST 25 lbs or more. Also, SPEED is an important litmus test. If the opener says it will open a 16′ gate but takes 28 seconds to do it, then it is because the plastic parts are using a lower gear ratio to move a larger gate at a slower speed. High quality openers with steel parts can easily move a 16′ (and 650lbs!!) gate 90 degrees in under 13 or 14 seconds.

Other things to look for are: UL Listings and ETL listings. A control box large enough to accomodate a regular size car battery (if the operator runs off of 12vdc and has battery backup) and other accessories such as a loop detectors, chargers, a UL approved electrical outlet, etc…. Here’s an idea for you, if you plan to use decorative lights on your front fence line or in your yard at Christmas, we have seen people install an extra radio receiver and relay to activate those lights REMOTELY from the gate operator box. No more sloshing out in 40 degree rain to turn the lights on and off during the holidays!! A good size control box affords you the room for these kinds of options and can still be easily hidden behind landscaping or your fence line.

If you do your homework, buy a good quality gate opener from someone who KNOWS THIS EQUIPMENT WELL, and make sure it is installed correctly, you will have an automatic gate that you can depend and rely on for many years. The convenience and security aspects of this equipment not only make using your gated entrance easier, but also will actually improve your property value. Spending $300 or $400 more upfront on equipment you plan to use for many years is an investment that will actually save you thousands over the long run and provide the convenience and luxury you originally intended when you gated your property in the first place.

Originally posted 2009-09-10 11:50:07.

Fire can be your friend. Everyone uses it in their homes, at work or even with leisure. However, its fury can be very dangerous. All of us know how destructive it is, especially when it becomes bigger. That is why it is very important for us to have safety measures in order to avoid injuries from fire.

There are simple ways to prevent unwanted fire in your homes. As they say, prevention is better than cure. You do not want to put yourself in the shoes of fire victims because it can be a burden. If your house is burned down, it can burden you financially (what more if your house is not insured). This can also lead to other difficulties. Your body may be compromised due to inhalation of fumes. In addition, you will be deprived from the comfort of your homes since you will not have a place to stay (if your house is extensively burned down). It is also hard to loose a lot of important stuff like old photos, documents and papers as well as various memorabilia that you keep within the bounds of your homes. All of the years of hard work can easily go down the drain if you become too complacent with fire.

As mentioned a while ago, any homeowner can practice simple measures to avoid fire from happening. One of it is keeping a fire extinguisher. This piece of device is not limited for business use only. Any homeowner can have the privilege of keeping one. This can act as your first aid for accidents. If your curtain or drape is on flame because of your candles, you can immediately extinguish it with the use of this device.

You can also try to install smoke detectors in your homes. Smoke is the first hand indicator when something is burning. Definitely, if you have such a huge house, you might want to install one of these devices in your rooms. That way, you will have some way of alarming yourself when an impending fire occurs.

Smoke detectors can also work hand in hand with sprinklers. Sometimes, they are interconnected. Once the device detects smoke, they set-off the alarms and trigger the sprinklers to shower water all over the place. This is very helpful in cases, where you can no longer control fire.

However, the best weapon to use in preventing unwanted fire from happening is common sense. These things are not needed to be outlined as part of your home safety precautions. Common sense tells us to blow the candle off when you leave your homes. Common sense tells us never to put anything that has flames near curtains or a trash can full of paper. It takes initiative to ensure that a cigarette is totally put off before throwing it in the trash.

Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and sprinklers may be too much for you to install in your homes. However, they can be great devices that can serve you well in your own fire prevention practice. Nevertheless, if you want practical and affordable means of preventing fire, use your common sense. There is no better way to do it.

Our homes are our havens and when we are in our homes we need to feel safe and secure. Locks help assure nobody comes in and gas and smoke detectors help protect us from within our homes assuring that if a gas leak or fire occurs we know about it soon enough to get to safety. Everybody should have a gas detector and a smoke detector in their home; it’s as simple as that. If for some reason you don’t have a gas detector or your gas detector is old then perhaps you could use a little help in what to look for when buying a gas detector.

First of all, check to see how many gases the gas detector can detect. Most people just need a gas detector capable of detecting carbon monoxide however if you live in an area where you may be potentially exposed to more gases you will certainly want a gas detector capable of picking up all of those. Just make sure you know what you need so you will know what to shop for.

Another important aspect of a home gas detector is battery life. You will want a detector that runs on batteries and that has a long life. If the battery life is too short and your gas detector dies then it won’t be protecting you. Make sure your home gas detector has an alarm, light, or something of that nature that goes off when the battery is dying so that you will know to replace it.

If you live near a landfill, refinery, power plant, or anything of that nature then a Minirae gas detector system will alert you at any time there are unsafe levels of gas in the air. There is nothing wrong with taking precautions to ensure you and your family are safe and RAE Systems has a variety of gas detectors for your home that will allow you to sleep well at night.

In this day and age we should not rely on companies and our government to let us know when there are unsafe levels of gases in the air. Instead, we should take some responsibility as well and have a gas detector in our home to help us stay safe at all times.

A gate operator is a type of mechanical device used to open and shut a gate, such as the one found at the end of a driveway, and among all the operators in the market, the cream of the crop title goes to Viking gate operators, which are produced by the Viking Access company. Viking Access is the leader in the manufacture of the latest innovations in gate automation and access control hardware. Viking gate operators are available in different configurations and some of the best are discussed in this article.

The Viking i8 operator is an automatic gate opener and is Viking Access’ most elegant solution for automated access control. The uniqueness in its installation, the flexibility of its operation, the efficiency of its automation, and the flexibility of its integration allows this operator to be a perfect solution in different situations where aesthetic appeal is required to satisfy even the clients with the most exquisite taste.

Another great product solution from Viking is the swing gate operator. This operator has low profile yet compact design and the power that can support or hold gates of up to 700 lbs of weigh and up to 16 feet in length. One model of this operator is the Viking G-5 which revolutionizes the idea of secured gate operation. This gate operator is constructed with the best and highest quality materials and components and is designed to highlight any styles of gate. This operator is capable of operating at continuous cycle at 24V DC, directly converted from an AC line. Its battery has a backup that can provide up to as much as 400 cycles of operation which is good for a maximum capacity gate.

Viking t21 is a 1 horsepower electric gate opener that comes with a battery backup. This gate opener is a heavy duty gate operator with the capability of handling gates weighing as much as 1,200 lbs and with a length of 20 feet. Its smooth efficient and well-organized movement is achieved with soft start and stop using the latest in electronics technology.

There you go – the top three Viking gate operators, but Viking Access doesn’t stop here because this company works hard to identify, design, and manufacture product solutions that will be appealing to the industry as well as to its needs.

As the advancement in technology never stops, Viking Access continuously develops a completely intelligent and efficient line of operators to meet the consumers’ changing demands. Almost all Viking gate operators available in the market today offer full UL991 and UL325 compliance, soft start and stop, continuous operation, intelligent obstruction sensors, and extreme power efficiency. These operators also come with innovative features such self-learning and adaptive algorithms, lightning protection, hardware and software redundancy design, power surges and short circuit, and exclusive helical gear offering only the highest efficiency in the gate automation and access control hardware industry. Viking Access makes sure that it continuously modifies, augments, and improves its product line based on its customer’s valuable feedback and latest technology.

The humble intercom system has come a long way in recent years and is no longer limited to the simple front door unit and control panel. More and more features are being added as the technology becomes available and as a result the convenience and security that they offer the home owner has increased enormously. Once confined to business and apartment use intercoms are now becoming commonplace in residential homes as they become more affordable and with a wireless system, easily installed into an existing dwelling. Read on to find out about benefits that you may not have thought possible with a modern intercom system.

1. Home and Personal Security – the number one on the list for good reason. It goes without saying that the world can be a nasty place and protecting your home and loved ones has never been more important. With the use of a Video Intercom system you can view who is at your door before deciding to let them in. If the visitor is not someone you know you can find out the reason for their visit before opening the door. A video intercom can also be used for surveillance recording which is handy if you are going to be away from your home for a period of time and many units can support multiple cameras for all round protection.

2. Automated Entry – add an automatic gate opener to your intercom system and protect your home at the frontline. Gate openers are available to suit all types of gates, from single to double and swing or sliding gates. Open your front gate with the push of a button and with a self locking unit be assured that once your visitor is inside the gate will not be able to be manually opened by anyone else. The control of these units can be integrated into your intercom system and you have the choice of wired or wireless operation. Another feature that is available on some gate openers is solar powered operation, saving electricity and reducing the installation costs. With some top-end systems the gate can even be operated by your mobile phone!

3. Room Monitoring – With a central control panel and room stations set-up around the house you can use your intercom to monitor what is going on in those rooms. Keep tabs on the kids playing in the back room or use it to listen for when your sleeping baby awakes. With these units you can also communicate with the occupants of the room, so the kids will have no excuse for not hearing you ever again!

4. Have Your Favorite Music Piped Through Your Home – Several control units have the feature of inputs for a radio or a cd player and some units come with these already built in. Tune-in to your favorite radio station or put on your favorite cd and have the music piped to each room that has a station installed in it. Outdoor units are available for patios and entertaining areas, perfect for barbeques or having friends over.

5. More Home Security Options – the modern intercom system control unit can be configured to operate video monitoring and recording, motion detectors, window and door sensors and glass breakage sensors. They can also offer back to base monitoring for a complete home alarm and intercom system in one. Why settle for a simple home alarm when you can have the convenience of both systems in one?

Home Safety

Home Safety is something we all need to know. I can never remember where the things are that you’re supposed to turn to shut off the Gas, Water or Electricity, so I got my husband to give me a quick tour through our House so I could get a better handle on this Home Safety thing (and to share it with all my Readers, of course!).

Gas Safety

The First Rule is to Always Turn to the Right in a Clockwise Motion to Turn off a Valve.

Pop into my Website, [http://www.buildyourownhosue.ca], to see pictures of the Gas Line, Electrical Box, and exciting pictures of the Toilet! I’ve taken a bunch of shots so you can easily recognize these areas around your own house. (By the way, note how the Satellite Dish is in a nice, sheltered position — never put a Satellite Dish out in the open… it’ll just get damaged and then you’ll miss your favorite Shows, and we don’t want that!)

To Turn Off the Gas, you will need to Turn the Valve Clockwise until the Two Holes Match Up. Use a Crescent Wrench or Pipe Wrench for this, so be sure to have one handy — perhaps by the Front Entry or over by the Gas-line itself. (Odd little note: when my son, Aidan, was 3 years old, he loved his Crescent Wrench so much that he held it like a baby when he was watching T.V. Funny! He’s a Contractor’s Son, all right!)

You need to Turn Off the Gas if anyone is ever working on the Gasline (the holes are there so that you can lock in in an Off Position while the work is being done).
OR
If you ever suspect a Gas Leak — you might smell the gas in the house. Call the Gas Company and go and Shut off the Gas. Stay out of the House until they get there.
OR
If there’s a Fire in your house and you can safely get to the Gas-line without any possibility of you getting hurt, run over and Shut Off the Gas.

Electrical Safety

The Electrical Panel is generally found in the Furnace Room.

The Big Black Switch at the Bottom of the Panel is the Main Breaker Switch.

In an Emergency (like when you see smoke or fire coming out of a Plug), and it’s safe to do so, go to the Electrical Panel and Switch Off the Main Breaker Switch.

Problem: You’re using the Microwave and the Toaster at the same time, and the power quits to both.

Solution: Go to the Electrical Panel. Most of the ‘Breakers’ (other Switches) will be clearly marked with the name of the Room they service. Locate the one you think most closely fits the problem area, then Pull the Switch to the Opposite Side. This should solve the problem. You might have to try a couple of switches to get the Power back to your Appliances (or wherever they’re required).

Take special care not to use the same combination of power use in the future — find another plug for the Toaster, or use it after you’re done with the Microwave. (I don’t know why this is such a tricky combination — probably because of the power load…)

WARNING:

It’s critical that you NEVER, EVER Open the Electrical Panel. It could cause Serious Injury or Death. Never take any risks with Electricity. Call an Electrician to Solve any Serious Issues.

Water Problems

Okay, Water is pouring out of the Dishwasher or a Tap has Burst — what to do, what to do??

Go to the Furnace Room (Utility Room). Shut Off the Main Water Valves. Turn the Valve Clockwise (to the Right) to Shut them off.

The Main Water Shut-Off Valves look like Large Levers (often Red and Yellow) or in an older home, the Round Knob Handles. They’re usually on an Angled Pipe.

The Lever is Open when it is Flush with the Pipe in a Vertical Position.

The Lever is Closed when it is in a Horizontal Position to the Pipe.

Call your Plumber.

See if you have a Yellow Lever in the Furnace Room. That’s the Main Water Shutoff Valve.

And now for the Toilet… did you see the Bernie Mac (one of my favorite shows!) Episode where Wanda discovers the Toilet Overflowing? It’s every woman’s worst nightmare (or one of the worst!)…

Okay, so now you’re looking at the Toilet. There’s a pipe at the Base of it. See the little Lever? All you have to do is Turn the Lever Clockwise (To the Right) until it’s Horizontal (closed). That’s it!

Now you will probably still have a bunch of yucky water to clean up, but at least you’ll have stopped any more water from coming out. Now you can call your Plumber! Squeak open that wallet!

See how easy Home Safety can be? Mostly, it’s a matter of being aware of what can happen and having some idea of how to solve the problem. Just remember: Deal with what you can, yourself, then call in a Professional if it’s dangerous or too yucky for words!

Chamberlain Professional Products®, the single source provider for secure, convenient and quality products for every access point, introduces the LiftMaster® Variable Speed Heavy Duty Slide Gate Operator (Model VSL 595). Further enhancing the dealer’s portfolio of gate access solutions, the VSL 595 features unrivaled engineering that makes it an ideal gate operator for commercial applications where securing an opening quickly and efficiently is vital to the location, such as airports, manufacturing plants, government facilities, as well as detention centers or prisons. As the newest addition to the LiftMaster family of heavy duty slide gate operators, the VSL 595 model is equipped with a high-starting torque, continuous-duty industrial DC motor. With variable speed functionality, the power of the operator enables it to quickly ramp up to speeds of 2.2 feet per second and support gate lengths up to 70 feet and 1,700 pounds while still maintaining soft start and stop operation.

Designed for high security installations, the VSL 595 is outfitted with features that benefit professionals both during installation and maintenance checks. In addition to ensuring simple and secure access, the VSL 595 features manual disconnect, which ensures that manual operation is possible during emergencies and maintenance work. Coupled with this feature, the VSL 595 also offers an optional Secure Fire Department Release Box that allows the gate to be manually disconnected from the opposite side of the fence so firefighters have immediate access at all times. This heavy-duty slide gate operator disconnect can also be reengaged without having to reset open and close limits, providing reliable performance for dealers in the field. Also, the fully enclosed, NEMA3E, pre-galvanized 16-gauge steel, hinged-cabinet that houses the operator is oil-tight, weatherproof and lockable, deterring vandalism attempts on the operator. Additionally, on the outside of the control box is an integrated three-button control station that can help speed up installation and provide easy access when troubleshooting. The VSL 595 is also outfitted with an external reset button, offering a simple, quick and convenient option when resetting the operator after the alarm has been activated.

“Equipped with an exhaustive list of safety and security features and the ability to operate at high speeds for quick and controlled access, this extreme-duty slide gate operator is engineered to support the functional needs of even the most high-security commercial applications,” said Ken Roehl, vice president, marketing, Chamberlain Professional Products. “This reliable and rugged addition to the LiftMaster line of commercial gate operators provides dealers with a technically advanced, powerful gate access solution, helping to differentiate them in the marketplace as well as springboard them into specialty markets such as high-security commercial and industrial channels.”

Adding to the list of standard features on this unit, such as a built-in 312HM radio receiver, an adjustable timer and a two-year warranty, this heavy duty slide gate operator is powered by the LiftMaster gate logic (GL) board. The gate logic board controls a fully adjustable inherent obstruction detection system, meaning that if the gate strikes an obstruction, a closing gate will reverse to open and an opening gate will stop. This system also provides inputs for external contact and non-contact sensors such as photo-eyes and edge devices that are synonymous with LiftMaster product safety features.

Originally posted 2009-07-15 09:08:29.

Everybody wants to feel safe at home, of course, but do you realize that your home is also prone to danger such fire, injury and so on?

Disaster can take place anytime, anywhere, including at home and unfortunately, we sometimes ignore that fact. Here are some tips to protect you and your family while enjoying your precious time at home.

Be extra careful with FIRE. According to the data from National Fire Protection Association (NFPA),in the USA alone, in 2004, there were 1,5 millions fire and those killed 4000 people and almost 20,000 injured. The fire also cost property damage on US$ 9 billion. Keep your children away from the stove and oven and do not go to bed without checking whether your kitchen appliances have been properly turned off or not. Install smoke detector and change when needed to ensure safety. Do not leave hot iron, or your stove on and make sure that your cigarettes are totally out before you empty the ashtray into the trash (if you are smoker).

Check your electrical equipment periodically to see whether it is installed properly or maybe it needs the new one because fire can be caused by electricity shortcut.

Keep your poison and hazardous materials like room spray, mosquito killers and so on from your children. Children are curious about everything, and there are some cases children have near died after drinking mosquito spray.

Never put your furniture on your verandas or balconies, especially if you have under 5-year-old kid. Your kids can climb up on in and take a life threatening fall.. Use gate barriers to keep your children away from stairs and steps. Stairs must be lighted properly.

Choking and injury is also one of the most killing disasters at home. Make sure that there is no tiny or hard object near your children. Keep sharp, hard objects like needles, nails out of your children’s reach. If you cook, do not let your children go near you, especially if you are holding a knife.

Place rubber mats in your bathroom to protect slippery surfaces from creating a fall. Clean your bathroom floor after taking a bath. When your children take a bath, monitor them closely.

Make sure that every door in your house is locked properly before you go to sleep or before you go to work. Create a peephole to see who is outside before letting someone enter your house. Keep your garage shut and money in safety in deposit box.
